Events for December 2018
Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce
Oct 6 - Dec 23    “The Petaluma Historical Library & Museum, A Story of Civic Progress & Pride” Exhibit
As part of its 40th Anniversary Celebration, the exhibit affords the opportunity to highlight the history of the PMA while also imparting the remarkable story of the building in its manifestations as the Petaluma Carnegie Library and as the Petaluma Historical Library & Museum. Three themes will run throughout the exhibit: the wisdom of architectural preservation (a goal of the exhibit is to bring to the attention of the community the need to retrofit the PHL&M); the cooperation between Petaluma’s citizens and city officials in planning, building, repurposing and maintaining the PHL&M; and the essential role women and Progressive Era policy played in the building’s history. An extensive, free Program of Public Service has been scheduled to accompany the exhibit; a tour of the exhibit will be given each weekend by its curator, Paula Freund; and reservations for private and school group tours will be taken. The Petaluma Historical Library & Museum is located at 20 Fourth Street in downtown Petaluma and is open to the public Thursday through Sunday 10 to 4. Admission to the exhibition is free. Donations welcome. For additional information: 707-778-4398, petalumamuseum.com.

Dec 14    A Chanticleer Christmas
Chanticleer presents its beloved annual holiday tradition with a transcendent offering of sacred music from the Renaissance to joyful spirituals and traditional carols in some of the Bay Area's most ornately decorated missions, churches and cathedrals. In a longstanding Bay Area tradition spanning a remarkable 40 years, A Chanticleer Christmas is one of the ensemble's most enduring offerings and tells the story of the nativity in music written from the 13th to 21st centuries. The program begins with candlelit Gregorian Chant and continues with a wide selection of music by Palestrina, Sweelinck, Biebel, Rachmaninoff and Poulenc; traditional English and Spanish Carols; and the world premiere of Behold, a Simple, Tender Babe by choral composer Peter Bloesch. Describing the Bay Area's array of holiday musical offerings, the San Jose Mercury News praised A Chanticleer Christmas as "one of the most consistently rewarding" and "sublimely beautiful" while also commenting that "the ensemble's phrasing was flawless, it's dynamics crisp and polished."
