Feb 5    Behind Enemy Lines - An Evening with a Holocaust Survivor
THE TRUE STORY OF A FRENCH JEWISH SPY IN NAZI GERMANY Chabad Jewish Center of Petaluma welcomes Mrs. Marthe Cohn as a guest speaker on Tuesday, February 5, at 7 p.m. at Santa Rosa Junior College Petaluma. Open to the entire community! This year marks 80 years from Kristallnacht when Nazis took to the streets of Germany. They torched synagogues. Vandalized Jewish homes, schools, and businesses. They murdered and arrested Jews simply for being Jewish. The anniversary of Kristallnacht, considered the first main event of the Holocaust, comes as the Jewish community is once again in mourning - this time after an armed man opened fire in the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 people were killed in what is being described as the worst anti-Semitic attack in American history. Ninety-eight-year-old Holocaust survivor Marthe Cohn became a member of the intelligence service of the French First Army and was able to retrieve inside information about Nazi troop movements by slipping behind enemy lines. At age 80, Marthe was awarded France's highest military honor, the Medaille Militaire, joining the likes of Winston Churchill and other outstanding wartime heroes. The award officially acknowledged the heroic exploits of a beautiful young Jewish woman who faced death every day as she sought to help defeat the Nazi empire. At the time of the award, not even her children knew the extent of her service. Let us unite to send a clear message against hate and intolerance. Never Again! ? ? ? TICKETS Adults: $20 | Students: $15 | At door: $25 VIP Sponsor: $100 (Includes 2 tickets, preferred seating, and pre-event meet & greet) Signed copies of Marthe's book "Behind Enemy Lines": $20

Feb 7    'First Thursday' - Labor Law Seminar Series
Wage Stubs:  Where Little Mistakes = Big Lawsuits

California law allows employees to sue their employers, on behalf of the State of California.  The Private Attorneys General Act of 2004, known as “PAGA,” is becoming an increasingly dangerous source of litigation to employers, because this statute allows one employee to bring suit on behalf of all other “similarly-situated,” employees, before the other employees have even agreed to participate.  This has the effect of transforming even minor bookkeeping mistakes or oversights that affect more than one employee, into major lawsuits that can threaten an employer’s solvency. Because of the potential for substantial recoveries, these actions are proving increasingly attractive to plaintiffs’ lawyers.

This ongoing seminar series is being conducted by veteran Petaluma labor & employment attorney, Jay Putnam. Putnam, has advised employers exclusively, in labor matters for over 36 years. He hopes to provide local business owners and managers with a solid, working understanding of California labor law, as a means of helping them avoid the often crippling cost and disruption caused by lawsuits resulting from a misunderstanding of applicable legal requirements.

Members are encouraged to bring their questions.  Putnam says he intends to conduct the seminars as "informal, working sessions, where people can bring their lunch and their questions and leave each month with important information that will immediately improve their business operations.

A new event series is launching at Keller Street CoWork, Sonoma County’s largest coworking space in Petaluma. On Thursday, February 21 and Thursday, March 28, Rise of the Indie Professional will zero in on the current economic climate. With 30% of the US workforce taking on freelance work, this number is set to increase and could be as high as 50% by 2030. Many in today’s job force want the freedom of working on their own terms. Danielle Stroble, Director of Keller Street CoWork, will guide the discussion, and share how the coworking business model supports the growing independent and gig worker economy in the North Bay. Carol Schmitt from Acclimate Us and NorthBay 2030 will weigh in her extensive experience and research in the field, recognizing the need to shift in how employers, workers, educators and policymakers support this line of work. To round out the panel, Ethan Brown from the Sonoma Economic Development Board will discuss how the organization supports the growth of the indie worker economy in Sonoma County. Following the event, stay to enjoy a Networking Mixer at 5pm with the rest of the Keller Street CoWork members, mingle and meet with like-minded business owners in the area. Feb 23    Surprising Gifts of Later Life
The surprising gifts of later life are the subject of a free public program presented by Village Network of Petaluma. The talk is centered on research from Dr. Susan Stewart’s recently published work, Winter’s Graces: The Surprising Gifts of Later Life. Village Network of Petaluma offers programs to the general public as well as to Village members. Drawing on folklore, recent research, the world’s wisdom traditions and the experience of elders themselves, Professor Stewart will describe a balanced and heartening view of age that acknowledges its challenges and celebrates its many gifts. “It takes an abundance of audacity, courage, ingenuity, humility, and humor to age well in a culture that mistakenly equates aging with devastating decline,” says Stewart. “Fortunately, these and other life-enhancing qualities tend to ripen with age.” Decades of research have established that the catastrophic conditions often associated with late life, such as severe dementia and debilitating frailty, are the exception, not the rule, says Stewart. In addition, she has found in her years of research that older adults generally have - a deepening acceptance of themselves and others, imperfections and all - a growing sense of being embedded in something greater than themselves - an increasing ability to find ingenious solutions to complex and important problems - enhanced capacities for contentment and for enjoying simple pleasures. A conversation with the audience about growing older follows Stewart’s presentation. She will also share how making dolls helped her overcome writing challenges. Copies of Winter’s Graces will be available for purchase and signing by the author. Susan Stewart, PhD, is an emerita professor of psychology (Sonoma State University), a retired psychotherapist, and a regular contributor to Psychology Today. Winter’s Graces is published by She Writes Press, Berkeley, Calif. Village Network of Petaluma is a non-profit membership community of support and connection for older adults living in the Petaluma and Penngrove area. Founded in 2014, it is one of 250+ villages nationwide, part of a groundbreaking approach to create vibrant, active, and connected lives as we age.
